Lonavala-Pune-Daund Rail Line to Be Fully Fenced by August; 150 km Work Completed
Lonavala-Pune-Daund
Railways plan to complete fencing along the Lonavala-Pune-Daund stretch by August 2026, with around 150 km already secured to curb trespassing and improve passenger safety.
Pune | March 19, 2026: In a major safety initiative, Indian Railways is set to complete fencing along the Lonavala-Pune-Daund railway corridor by August 2026, aiming to significantly reduce trespassing incidents and enhance operational safety.
Officials from the Pune division of Central Railway stated that nearly 150 kilometres of fencing has already been completed out of the total 290-kilometre stretch. The remaining work is currently underway, with tenders awarded for the entire route.

The project, which began in early 2024, focuses on one of the most accident-prone railway sections in the region. Frequent trespassing and related fatalities along this corridor had raised serious safety concerns, prompting authorities to take up large-scale infrastructure measures.
Railway officials said the fencing project, estimated at a cost of around ₹209 crore, includes continuous barriers along the tracks as well as the construction of pedestrian subways. These subways are intended to provide safe crossing points for people, cattle and small vehicles, reducing the need for unsafe track crossings.

The Lonavala-Pune-Daund route is a crucial railway link with heavy passenger and freight movement, including high-speed train operations. Authorities noted that fencing is being prioritised on routes where train speeds exceed 110 kmph, as such sections are particularly vulnerable to accidents caused by unauthorised access to tracks.
According to railway officials, once the project is completed, it is expected to drastically minimise trespassing incidents and improve overall safety for both passengers and railway operations. The initiative is also part of a broader nationwide effort by Indian Railways to install safety fencing across high-risk routes.
Data presented in Parliament indicates that more than 16,000 kilometres of railway fencing has already been installed across India, with several zones undertaking similar safety upgrades.

Authorities emphasised that along with physical barriers, awareness campaigns and enforcement measures will continue to play a key role in preventing accidents. The combination of fencing, subways and monitoring is expected to create a safer railway environment across the Pune division.
With the project progressing steadily, officials remain confident of meeting the August deadline, marking a significant milestone in railway safety infrastructure in the region.
