LPG shortage disrupts food services in Pune’s Hinjewadi IT Park. Companies limit cafeteria menus as FITE demands work-from-home option for employees.
Pune | 12 March, 2026: Pune’s largest technology hub, Hinjewadi IT Park, is facing an unusual operational disruption as a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has started affecting food services across several corporate campuses. The crisis has forced companies to limit cafeteria operations, prompting some organisations to advise employees to bring home-cooked meals to the office. The issue has also triggered demands from IT employee groups for temporary work-from-home arrangements until the fuel supply situation stabilises.
Hinjewadi, which houses offices of major technology companies such as Infosys, Wipro, TCS, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra, depends heavily on large-scale catering facilities to serve thousands of employees every day. However, catering vendors operating inside these corporate campuses have reported difficulties in procuring sufficient commercial LPG cylinders, forcing kitchens to operate with restricted capacity. As a result, many office cafeterias have temporarily reduced menu options, while some cooking stations that require continuous gas supply have been shut down.

Several companies have circulated internal advisories informing employees that food courts may not function at full capacity for the next few days. In some offices, employees have been asked to cooperate with vendors by carrying tiffins from home wherever possible. Vendors say that preparing meals for thousands of people daily requires high-capacity burners and commercial LPG cylinders, and alternative cooking options such as electric appliances cannot fully replace these systems.
The LPG shortage appears to be part of a broader supply disruption affecting multiple sectors that depend on commercial gas, including restaurants, hotels and institutional kitchens. Industry experts say that global energy supply pressures and logistical constraints have affected LPG distribution in certain regions. In Pune, some residential consumers have also reported delays in cylinder deliveries, with waiting periods stretching for several days in some areas.
Amid the disruption, the Forum for IT Employees (FITE), an organisation representing IT professionals, has urged companies operating in Hinjewadi to allow employees to work from home temporarily. According to the group, many tech workers travel long distances daily and rely heavily on office cafeterias for meals during working hours. Without proper food facilities, commuting to the office becomes more difficult for employees who spend long hours at work.
Employee representatives say the issue highlights the broader infrastructure challenges in Hinjewadi, where daily office life is heavily dependent on corporate facilities due to limited food options in surrounding areas. They believe that allowing work-from-home arrangements for a short period could ease pressure on both employees and campus food vendors until LPG supplies return to normal.
Hinjewadi is one of India’s largest IT corridors, employing hundreds of thousands of professionals across multiple technology parks. Corporate campuses in the area operate large cafeterias that serve breakfast, lunch and snacks to employees throughout the day. Any disruption in these facilities can quickly affect workplace routines, especially for employees who rely on them as their primary food source during office hours.
Companies and vendors are currently exploring temporary alternatives to manage the situation, including outsourcing cooked meals from external kitchens, using electric cooking equipment where possible and reducing menu options to conserve LPG usage. However, vendors say these are only short-term solutions and cannot fully replace the efficiency of commercial gas-based cooking.
The situation has once again highlighted how supply chain disruptions can affect everyday operations in large corporate ecosystems. If LPG availability remains tight in the coming days, more companies in Pune’s IT corridor may need to consider additional contingency measures to support employees and maintain smooth workplace functioning.
