In a major relief for Maharashtra’s hotel and eatery owners grappling with gas shortages due to global conflicts, the state government will increase commercial gas allocation by 20%, raising supply to 50% of pre-crisis levels from March 23. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal also ordered immediate renewal of kerosene distribution licenses without fees.

Mumbai | March 23, 2026 Maharashtra’s hospitality sector, battered by restricted commercial gas supplies amid international tensions, is set for significant relief following directives from the Central government’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry. Speaking on Sunday, state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced that commercial gas distribution to hotels, dhabas, restaurants, industrial canteens, food processing units, and dairy businesses will rise by an additional 20%.

The decision addresses acute shortages triggered by the ongoing war situation, which had forced many establishments to curtail menus and operations. Bhujbal highlighted that around 40% of small and large hotels across the state, and a staggering 50% in Mumbai alone out of 20,000 in the city and five lakh statewide.

Priority for the extra quota will go to essential food-related businesses, including government-run subsidized canteens, community kitchens, and schemes for migrant workers.In parallel measures, Bhujbal directed district collectors to expedite kerosene distribution license renewals. Pending licenses will be deemed automatically renewed without charges, ive operations, and stabilize food services
