Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that efforts to grant national memorial status to the historic Umaji Naik Memorial in Pune will be expedited, resolving issues flagged by community representatives.

Pune | 11 March, 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed state officials to accelerate administrative steps toward securing national memorial status for the historic Umaji Naik Memorial located at Mamledar Kacheri in Pune, following a high‑level meeting with community representatives and trust members. The assurance came after a delegation of the Ramoshi‑Berad community met the chief minister at the Vidhan Bhavan to press for recognition and preservation of the site.

Umaji Naik, often hailed as an early revolutionary figure in Maharashtra’s history, is commemorated through a memorial in Pune that many advocates believe merits national recognition for its historical and cultural significance. During Tuesday’s discussions, members of the memorial trust underscored the site’s importance and appealed for its elevation to national status, framing it as part of the broader heritage narrative that should be preserved for future generations.

Fadnavis responded positively to these appeals, acknowledging the memorial’s legacy and directing Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to convene immediate meetings to resolve outstanding hurdles. These administrative directives are intended to streamline processes that have delayed progress on the national status application, officials said.

Representatives present included community leaders and trust members such as Appasaheb Chavan, Mohan Madne, Bhupendra Mujumdar, Sanjay Jadhav, Udaynath Chavan Maharaj, Bala Jadhav, Ganesh Patole, and Sunil Jadhav, who participated in the deliberations with state leadership. Their presence highlighted the grassroots demand for recognition and reflected longstanding community efforts to preserve regional heritage tied to the Ramoshi‑Berad community’s historical narrative.

The Umaji Naik Memorial, situated at a prominent historical site in Pune, commemorates the legacy of the crusading figure Umaji Naik, whose resistance against colonial authority and advocacy for local communities has been a point of pride for generations. Supporters of the memorial’s elevation contend that national status would not only honour Naik’s contributions but also draw wider public attention and resources for preservation and educational outreach.

The chief minister’s directive signals a renewed commitment from the Maharashtra government to align state heritage sites with broader national recognition frameworks. While the process of securing national memorial designation can involve multiple layers of bureaucratic review and clearances, state officials are now tasked with clearing procedural obstacles as quickly as possible, according to sources.

Heritage experts and cultural policymakers have long discussed the value of elevating historical monuments that resonate with regional histories and collective memory. Advocates argue that national status can help channel central funding for maintenance, facilitate tourism development, and integrate local stories into the national historical canon, helping to foster broader public engagement. Although the Umaji Naik Memorial has been celebrated locally for years, its supporters see national designation as a significant step in recognising under‑represented figures in India’s liberation history.

Critics of heritage designation processes sometimes warn that administrative obstacles and political considerations can delay recognition for deserving sites. In the case of Umaji Naik’s memorial, the chief minister’s recent intervention is being viewed as a constructive push to overcome such delays, potentially setting a precedent for similar efforts in other parts of the state.

As the process moves forward, state heritage officials, municipal authorities, and community leaders will need to coordinate documentation, clearances, and compliance with regulatory standards set by central heritage bodies. If successful, the national status designation would mark a significant milestone for the Pune memorial and contribute to wider efforts to acknowledge diverse strands of India’s historical legacy.
