Maharashtra Expands Transplant Support to ₹20 Lakh Under Ayushman Bharat and MJPJAY
Ayushman Bharat
The state has raised financial assistance for major transplants to ₹20 lakh under Ayushman Bharat and MJPJAY, covering heart, lung, liver and other critical procedures. Eligibility, benefits and full details here.
MUMBAI, 14 October 2025 – Maharashtra has increased financial support for high-cost transplant surgeries to as much as ₹20 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. The move marks one of the most significant expansions in the state’s healthcare coverage and is expected to ease the financial burden on thousands of families facing life-saving surgeries. The government order, issued on 14 October, brings transplants such as heart, lung and liver procedures under a higher assistance bracket after years of demand from patient groups and the medical community. Officials said the decision followed a detailed cost analysis that showed most transplants could not be completed within the previous limit of ₹5 lakh, leaving patients with enormous out-of-pocket expenses.
The enhanced support includes ₹22 lakh for liver transplants, which are among the costliest procedures. Heart-lung and standalone lung transplants will now receive coverage up to ₹20 lakh. TAVI and TAVR procedures also fall under the ₹20 lakh limit, while TMVR has been capped at ₹10 lakh. Bone marrow transplant support ranges from ₹9.5 lakh to ₹17 lakh depending on the complexity. Heart transplants carry assistance of up to ₹15 lakh. According to health officials, the revised limits became applicable immediately, and any patient with complete documentation can avail the benefits at empanelled hospitals. The government said the increase was essential to ensure that patients do not lose access to critical surgeries due to cost barriers.
The decision is rooted in recommendations made by a committee within the health department, which reviewed the rising costs of major transplant procedures. Patients had been reporting long delays, fundraising struggles and incomplete treatments under the earlier financial cap. After reviewing national and international benchmarks, the committee advised that the support limit be raised for nine high-cost conditions that consistently exceed the earlier ₹5 lakh ceiling. The proposal was formally approved on 15 September, paving the way for the expanded cover. Under the revised system, the State Health Assurance Society has been authorised to draw funds directly for transplant cases and maintain a dedicated reserve for future claims. Along with patient support, the government has approved additional incentive allowances for doctors and healthcare staff in government hospitals for performing complex transplant procedures, acknowledging the specialised effort these surgeries require.
Eligibility requirements remain straightforward. Beneficiaries must present an Ayushman card or ration card and a valid identity document such as Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, driving licence, disability certificate, senior citizen card, ex-serviceman card or bank passbook. For MJPJAY beneficiaries, there is no age limit, but the applicant must be a resident of Maharashtra and the family’s annual income must not exceed ₹1 lakh. All approved procedures will be provided cashless in listed government and private hospitals across the state, ensuring that patients do not need to make advance payments at any stage of treatment.
The expansion signals a major shift in how Maharashtra approaches life-saving medical care. With rising transplant needs and a growing number of patients requiring advanced surgical options, the new financial ceiling aims to prevent families from slipping into long-term debt or losing treatment opportunities. Healthcare experts believe the move will widen access to specialised surgeries, reduce treatment dropout rates and strengthen trust in public health schemes. For patients and families who previously struggled with mounting bills, the revised support offers a level of security that could mean the difference between delayed treatment and timely care. As hospitals begin implementing the new limits, the state expects a significant improvement in outcomes for transplant patients in the coming months.
