Maharashtra moves Centre for CBI investigation into Ajit Pawar plane crash amid political tensions and public demand for transparency.

Pune | 23 February, 2026- The Maharashtra government has formally requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the tragic plane crash that killed Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others. The crash, which occurred on January 28 near Baramati in Pune district, has sparked widespread public and political demand for a thorough and transparent investigation.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the state submitted the request to the Union Home Ministry, stating that while investigations by the state CID and aviation authorities are ongoing, a CBI inquiry will enhance transparency and ensure all aspects of the crash are examined.

The aircraft, a chartered Learjet 45, went down while attempting to land, killing all passengers onboard. Preliminary investigations are examining technical factors, maintenance records, and flight data to determine the cause.

The move for a central investigation has created political friction. Rohit Pawar, legislator and nephew of the late Ajit Pawar, expressed concern that involving the CBI could delay results, suggesting that the state CID could handle the inquiry efficiently. This disagreement reflects broader political sensitivities surrounding the incident.

Local communities in Loni Bhapkar village near Baramati, close to the crash site, held a shutdown (bandh) demanding a comprehensive probe and release of all evidence, including CCTV and flight records. The incident has intensified public scrutiny and highlighted the need for accountability in aviation safety.

Aviation experts note that while preliminary findings are expected shortly, a CBI investigation can provide a broader perspective, especially given the high-profile nature of the victims. The inquiry will examine operational decisions, regulatory compliance, and technical aspects of the flight.

By seeking a CBI probe, the Maharashtra government aims to address public and political concerns surrounding the Ajit Pawar plane crash. While debates continue over central versus state investigation, authorities are working to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry, balancing speed with comprehensive analysis.
