The minister’s comment“take loans, become debt‑ridden, and then demand waiver” has triggered uproar among farmer groups, who demand immediate full loan forgiveness.

Mumbai | November 8, 2025: A controversy has erupted in Maharashtra’s agrarian landscape after minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil made a remark during a public rally in Malshiras town that drew sharp criticism from farmer organisations. Addressing a gathering, Vikhe Patil said, “Society to form, borrow again, and again demand loan waiver…this has been happening for many years. This is not something to worry about.”

The comment came while discussing the longstanding demand for farm‑loan waiver in the state. While the minister also affirmed the government’s pledge that the ruling Mahayuti coalition under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will implement farmers’ debt relief, the initial line struck many as dismissive of farmers’ plight.

Farmer groups reacted swiftly. For them, the minister’s words came across as belittling their call for relief amid crop losses, rising input costs and climate disruptions. Leaders warned of escalated protests if the government did not move to grant immediate waiver of outstanding crop‑loans as pledged in the election manifesto.

In response to the backlash, Vikhe Patil clarified that his statement was being taken out of context. He insisted that the state government remains committed to “100 per cent loan‑waiver” and urged farmers to continue work on their land while relief is being organised.

Political observers say the controversy reveals a fault‑line in the coalition government’s approach: balancing fiscal discipline with populist demands. With farmer unrest swelling in parts of western Maharashtra and Marathwada, the government faces growing pressure to convert promises into tangible relief before the next sowing season.
