The Maharashtra government is considering supplying 7 TMC water from Mulshi Dam to Pune, aiming to bridge the widening demand-supply gap and reduce dependency on excess water lifting

Pune | 23 March, 2026: In a move that could significantly ease the city’s water concerns, the Maharashtra government is considering providing an additional 7 TMC of water to Pune from the Mulshi Dam.

The proposal comes amid rising demand in the city, with the Pune Municipal Corporation currently requiring approximately 21.03 TMC of water annually. However, the existing supply from the irrigation department stands at 14.61 TMC, creating a substantial shortfall.

Despite an official sanctioned quota of 11.50 TMC, the civic body has been lifting nearly 20 to 21 TMC water each year to meet growing needs, leading to an annual penalty burden of around ₹70 to ₹75 crore.Officials believe that the proposed additional allocation could help bridge this gap, reduce excess water lifting, and bring down the recurring financial penalties. The move is also expected to provide relief to residents, particularly in newly developed and merged areas.

However, challenges remain on the infrastructure front. Authorities have highlighted the need for a comprehensive water distribution network across the city, especially in areas added after the 2017 merger of 32 villages. Many of these localities still depend heavily on water tankers.

Estimates suggest that developing the required infrastructure could cost between ₹4,000 crore and ₹5,000 crore over the next three to four years. With Pune’s population, including floating residents, nearing 80 lakh, the demand for water in newly expanded areas alone is projected to rise by 250 to 300 million litres per day.
