Maharashtra Relocates Young Tigress to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve Under ‘Operation TARA’ to Boost Population

A three-year-old tigress has been successfully translocated from Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve as part of Maharashtra’s Operation TARA, marking a key step in tiger conservation efforts.

Mumbai | November 14, 2025: In a landmark step for tiger conservation in Maharashtra, the state Forest Department has successfully relocated a young tigress, T20-S-2, from Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) under the long-term initiative, “Operation TARA.” This effort, approved by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, aims to strengthen the tiger population in the Sahyadri landscape.

The three-year-old tigress was captured safely in the Khadsangi Range of Tadoba following strict NTCA guidelines. She received comprehensive veterinary care throughout the operation, led by Dr. R. S. Khobragade, Veterinary Officer (Wildlife), TATR, to ensure minimal stress and complete health monitoring. She was transported by road in a specially designed wildlife vehicle to Sahyadri.

At STR, the tigress has been soft-released into the Sonarli enclosure for acclimatization and observation before gradual integration into the wild. The process is being executed under the scientific guidance of the Wildlife Institute of India, reflecting a coordinated, research-backed approach to wildlife conservation.

Tushar Chavan, Field Director of STR, highlighted, “Operation TARA is a big step forward for Sahyadri. The soft release marks the beginning of a scientifically planned recovery programme. With WII’s support, we will continue careful monitoring to rebuild Sahyadri as a strong tiger habitat.”

M. S. Reddy, Chief Wildlife Warden of Maharashtra, added, “This translocation is a milestone in reviving Sahyadri’s tiger population. I congratulate the teams of Tadoba and Sahyadri for their professional and scientific efforts.”
