The Maharashtra Settlement Department has directed divisional commissioners to conduct an inquiry into 47 officials in Pune district over alleged irregularities in land registration and measurement procedures during the last four to five years.

April 4, 2026 | Pune: The Maharashtra Settlement Department has ordered an inquiry into 47 officials in Pune district following allegations of serious irregularities in land registration and land measurement processes. The action comes after a preliminary review of work carried out over the past four to five years reportedly revealed major procedural lapses and questionable practices. According to sources, the department has instructed divisional commissioners to initiate departmental scrutiny against the concerned officials. The decision has been taken after an internal assessment suggested that multiple cases involving land records, registration documentation and measurement procedures were handled with significant discrepancies.
Officials said the inquiry was recommended after a review committee examined records from the past few years and flagged several serious errors. The preliminary report reportedly highlights that irregularities were noticed in a large number of cases, raising concerns about transparency and compliance with standard procedures. Sources indicated that the department has asked for a detailed verification of files linked to land survey work, ownership documentation, and record updates. The irregularities are suspected to involve improper processing of applications, flawed measurement reports, and possible manipulation in land record entries, which may have led to disputes and financial losses.

The department’s move is being seen as part of a wider crackdown on corruption and inefficiency in land administration, as land-related complaints and disputes have increased in Pune district over recent years due to rapid urbanisation and rising property values. The inquiry is expected to cover cases cleared during the last four to five years, and officials have been directed to examine whether any violations occurred in issuing orders, approving measurement reports, or updating land records. If wrongdoing is established, strict disciplinary action may be taken against the responsible officers.
Sources further stated that the Revenue Minister has also taken note of the issue and has directed that the investigation be carried out in a time-bound manner. The department is expected to submit a report after scrutiny of the relevant files and procedures. The probe is likely to bring increased accountability in the land administration system, as authorities aim to ensure that registration and measurement processes are conducted strictly as per rules to prevent disputes and misuse.
