Maharashtra government mandates NOC from housing societies for liquor shops after Kalewadi–Rahatani protests. Licences suspended, stricter checks enforced, and officials held accountable for violations of rules.

Pimpri-Chinchwad| December 11, 2025:
The Maharashtra government has introduced stricter regulations for liquor shops operating in residential areas following complaints from residents in the Kalewadi -Rahatani region. The decision comes after two outlets were suspended for functioning without mandatory clearances, highlighting safety and nuisance concerns.

Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap had raised the issue in the state legislature, citing repeated grievances from local societies such as Sahyadri GH, Shivtirth CHS, Anant Park, and Srinagar-Rahatani. Residents reported late-night disturbances, safety hazards, and incidents of drunk driving linked to nearby liquor shops.

Under the new regulations, all liquor outlets in residential pockets must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the housing society before opening or relocating. Additionally, relocated shops will require site inspections before approval, ensuring compliance with building and excise regulations. The licences of Vikrant Wine Shop and Bajaj Desi Liquor Shop were suspended as part of the enforcement action.

Authorities have also initiated a crackdown on officials from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and excise department who permitted illegal operations. Strict verification of building permissions and other documents is now mandatory before granting new licences. The government emphasizes that these changes aim to protect residents’ safety and maintain public order, while ensuring that business operations adhere to legal standards. The move signals a firm approach towards preventing unauthorized liquor sales and addressing citizen concerns effectively.

Residents and local authorities are now expected to cooperate closely to implement these guidelines and prevent violations in the future, ensuring that residential areas remain safe and peaceful.
