Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis accused Congress of downplaying the national song “Vande Mataram” and announced a formal Assembly debate during the March Budget session to restore its rightful status.
Mumbai|9 December 2025: Maharashtra’s ruling government has decided to bring the national song “Vande Mataram” under formal discussion in the State Assembly’s upcoming Budget session, following sharp criticism from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. On Monday, Fadnavis accused Congress of repeatedly undermining the song’s importance. He said that despite its vital role in India’s freedom struggle, Congress has historically treated the anthem as a peripheral matter and is now hypocritically posing as defenders.
Fadnavis emphasized that “Vande Mataram” is not merely a song but the “mantra of India’s independence and nationalism.” He recalled how countless freedom fighters faced death with a smile, inspired by the anthem’s spirit. Expressing satisfaction at the unfolding national-level debate, he said the Maharashtra Assembly also recited the full song on Monday and pledged to let all parties voice opinions in March.

Rejecting allegations that his party aimed to destabilize allies through inducements, Fadnavis asserted that no defections are being engineered. He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining current alliances and suggested that a broader coalition with the Shiv Sena could emerge later.
Regarding recent concerns over soyabean pricing, Fadnavis dismissed rumors of market manipulation. He clarified that procurement under Minimum Support Price (MSP) is ongoing, with many markets reporting rates at or above MSP level. He said there is no outside interference in agricultural pricing, and farmers are receiving fair compensation as per government protocols.

As tension over cultural symbolism mixes with political maneuvering, the upcoming Assembly debate could revive discussions on national identity, party credibility, and the future of coalition politics in the state.
