Maharashtra to Digitise FIR-to-Chargesheet Process Within Six Months, Says CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra government plans to fully digitise police investigation processes from FIR to chargesheet within six months, integrating AI and blockchain to improve efficiency, transparency, and conviction rates.

Mumbai | 30 March, 2026: In a major push toward modernising law enforcement, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state police to digitise the entire investigation process-from registration of FIRs to filing of chargesheets-within the next six months.

The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting of senior police officials held at the office of the Maharashtra Police in Mumbai. The initiative aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability in criminal investigations by leveraging advanced technologies.

According to the Chief Minister, artificial intelligence will play a greater role in assisting police investigations, while blockchain technology will be introduced for managing and securing digital evidence. This system is expected to ensure that evidence remains tamper-proof, significantly strengthening the prosecution process.

Officials stated that once implemented, the digital framework will streamline case handling, reduce delays, and minimise human errors in documentation. It is also expected to improve coordination between various departments involved in the criminal justice system.

Highlighting the need for better outcomes, Fadnavis noted that the current conviction rate stands at around 50 percent, and the government has set an ambitious target of increasing it to 95 percent. The integration of technology, he said, would be key to achieving this goal.

The Chief Minister also emphasised performance-based evaluation of police units. Under the new system, districts will be assessed on a monthly basis, and those demonstrating efficient policing and better outcomes will be recognised and rewarded.

In addition to investigation reforms, the government is planning to replicate successful models for reducing road accidents. A pilot initiative implemented in Nagpur has reportedly led to a 30 percent decline in accidents, and similar strategies will now be expanded across the state, including on major corridors like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

On internal security, Fadnavis acknowledged the contribution of security forces in combating Left-wing extremism, particularly in Gadchiroli. He announced that personnel who have served for at least three years in the elite C-60 anti-Naxal unit will be honoured with a special C-60 medal in recognition of their service and sacrifice.

The government is also preparing to intensify its crackdown on narcotics. A statewide campaign will be launched to curb drug trafficking and consumption, with a special focus on educational institutions. The “Drug-Free Campus” initiative will be implemented in colleges and universities to protect the younger generation from substance abuse.

Senior officials, including Director General of Police Sadanand Date, were present at the meeting, along with key representatives from the home department.

The proposed reforms signal a significant shift toward technology-driven policing in Maharashtra. If implemented effectively, the move could set a benchmark for other states in improving criminal justice delivery and public safety.
