Maharashtra to Set Up 25 Centre’s of Excellence; ‘Mission Olympic’ Announced in State Budget
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced 25 Centres of Excellence and a Mission Olympic push in the state budget, aiming to strengthen sports infrastructure, nurture athletes, and boost global competitiveness.
Mumbai | 07 March, 2026:The Maharashtra government has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish 25 Centres of Excellence across the state as part of a broader push to strengthen sports development and improve the performance of athletes at international competitions. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while presenting key highlights of the state’s budget.
The proposed Centres of Excellence will focus on providing world-class training facilities, advanced coaching, sports science support and modern infrastructure to budding athletes. The initiative aims to identify and nurture sporting talent from grassroots levels and help them compete successfully at national and global platforms.
Alongside this initiative, the government has also introduced a dedicated programme titled ‘Mission Olympic’, which is designed to systematically prepare athletes from Maharashtra for future Olympic Games. The programme will focus on talent scouting, specialized training, international exposure and financial assistance to promising sportspersons.
Officials said the initiative is expected to significantly enhance the state’s sporting ecosystem by integrating training, research, and athlete development under one framework. Sports academies, educational institutions and professional coaches will be involved to ensure holistic development of athletes.
The government believes that strengthening sports infrastructure and offering structured support to athletes will not only improve medal prospects but also encourage youth participation in sports across urban and rural regions of the state. The Centres of Excellence are expected to be strategically distributed to ensure regional accessibility, enabling talented players from different districts to benefit from high-quality training without having to relocate far from their hometowns.
