Maharashtra authorities alert vehicle owners about fraudulent e‑challan websites, apps, and payment links; citizens advised to use only official portals to avoid scams and data theft.

Pune | December 10, 2025: The Maharashtra transport authorities have issued a strong advisory warning vehicle owners and drivers about a rising number of fraudulent e‑challan websites, fake apps, and bogus payment links. Officials noted that scammers are using fake portals, often circulated via SMS, WhatsApp, or email, to trick people into paying fines or providing personal information, risking both money and sensitive data.

According to the alert, legitimate e‑challan services are accessible only through official government portals with URLs ending in “.gov.in”. Fraudsters often use similar-looking domain names ending in “.com,” “.in,” or “.site,” coupled with modified logos, to make the fake platforms appear authentic. Citizens are cautioned not to click on suspicious links or download unverified APKs, as these may contain malware designed to steal banking credentials, OTPs, and other personal information.

The advisory comes after reports of messages claiming pending challans and urging drivers to install unauthorized apps. These fraudulent platforms promise convenience for licence renewal, vehicle registration, or fine payment, but in reality, their main objective is financial theft and data compromise. Officials emphasised that genuine notices and alerts are never sent through messaging apps, and all payments must be made directly via official portals.

To avoid falling victim, vehicle owners are advised to use only verified portals such as echallan.parivahan.gov.in, vahan.parivahan.gov.in, or sarathi.parivahan.gov.in. Users should avoid clicking on links in messages, confirm all notices through official portals, and report any suspicious messages to cybercrime authorities or local police stations.

Authorities are also monitoring suspicious websites and apps and coordinating with cybercrime cells to take swift action against these fraudulent operations. With scams on the rise, the department stressed that awareness and caution are the best defenses to prevent financial loss and protect personal data.
