Major Power Disruption Hits Pimpri-Bhosari Belt After Transformer Fault

Pune | 04 February, 2026 – Several parts of the Pimpri–Bhosari industrial and residential belt in Pune faced a major power disruption on Monday afternoon following a technical fault at a high-voltage power installation. The outage occurred after an 80 MVA transformer at a 220 kV extra high-voltage substation in Bhosari developed an internal fault around 3 pm, leading to an abrupt interruption in electricity supply across multiple localities. The sudden breakdown affected both households and industrial consumers, highlighting the vulnerability of critical power infrastructure in high-demand urban zones.

Areas impacted by the outage included Bhosari Gaothan, T Block, General Block, S Block, Shantinagar, Dhawade Vasti, Gulve Vasti, Chakrapani Vasahat, parts of Alandi Road, and nearby industrial pockets. Residents reported sudden power cuts during peak afternoon hours, while several small and medium-scale industries were forced to halt or slow operations due to the unexpected disruption. Pimpri–Bhosari, being a key manufacturing hub, relies heavily on uninterrupted electricity, making such outages particularly disruptive for businesses and daily life.

Following the incident, emergency technical teams from the state power transmission and distribution network were deployed to assess the damage and initiate corrective measures. Engineers confirmed that the transformer fault resulted in the loss of nearly 80 MVA load, significantly impacting the regional power grid. As an immediate response, authorities began redistributing the electrical load through alternate transmission lines to restore supply partially and prevent prolonged blackouts. However, officials cautioned that power supply may remain intermittent in some areas until full system stability is achieved.

Industrial units expressed concern over potential production losses, equipment shutdowns, and workflow disruptions caused by the outage. Many units operate on tight schedules and rely on continuous power, with limited backup arrangements. Residents, meanwhile, faced inconvenience due to non-functional elevators, water supply interruptions in housing societies, and disruptions to home-based work and businesses. The incident once again underlined the growing strain on urban power infrastructure amid increasing electricity demand.

Authorities have urged consumers to use electricity sparingly during the restoration phase to avoid overloading alternate circuits. Technical teams are continuing inspections to determine whether the faulty transformer can be repaired or if replacement will be required. Officials stated that safety checks and grid balancing remain a priority to ensure a smooth and sustainable restoration process, rather than a rushed fix that could trigger further faults.

Power infrastructure experts note that incidents like these stress the need for upgraded substations, additional transformer capacity, and preventive maintenance, especially in rapidly expanding industrial corridors like Pimpri–Bhosari. With rising residential density and industrial activity, power demand in the region has grown steadily, increasing pressure on existing systems. Strengthening grid resilience and expanding backup capacity could significantly reduce the impact of similar incidents in the future.

Restoration work remains ongoing, and authorities have assured residents and businesses that efforts are being made on a war footing to normalise supply at the earliest.
