After being sexually harassed in public, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum demanded that sexual harassment be made a nationwide crime, sparking debate on women’s safety across Mexico.
Mexico City | November 7, 2025: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged the government to officially recognize sexual harassment as a criminal offense after she was assaulted during a public interaction near the presidential palace. The incident has reignited a national conversation about the safety of women in Mexico.
The attack occurred when President Sheinbaum was greeting supporters outside the National Palace. A man, reportedly intoxicated, approached her, placed a hand on her shoulder, touched her chest, and tried to kiss her neck. Security officers immediately intervened and pulled the man away. The incident, captured on camera, quickly went viral, prompting widespread outrage.
Following the assault, Sheinbaum announced that her administration would soon review and strengthen nationwide laws on sexual harassment. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, she emphasized the importance of setting a precedent for women across Mexico.

“My thought is simple if I don’t file a complaint, what message does that send to other Mexican women? If this can happen to the President, what about the rest of the country’s women?” she said.
Women’s rights organizations have long warned of rising harassment and violence against women in Mexico. Activists have welcomed the President’s call for legal reforms, urging swift and concrete action to ensure better protection and justice for victims.
