Pune, 10 March, 2026: A minor fire broke out early Monday morning at Sassoon General Hospital in Pune, prompting the precautionary evacuation of around 70 patients from a ward of the hospital. Authorities confirmed that the situation was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported in the incident.
According to officials, the fire started at around 4:45 a.m. in the nurses’ room located on the ground floor of a ward building. The blaze reportedly began in a loft area used for storing ward-related materials such as registers, books, medicines and a wheelchair. These items caught fire, producing smoke that spread through parts of the ward.

Hospital staff quickly noticed the smoke and immediately began efforts to control the situation using available fire extinguishers. Meanwhile, an emergency call was placed to the city fire brigade around 5:01 a.m., following which multiple fire vehicles were dispatched to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Due to the smoke inside the ward, hospital authorities decided to evacuate approximately 70 patients admitted there and shift them to safer areas within the hospital premises. Medical staff, security personnel and firefighters coordinated the evacuation to ensure that patients were moved safely and without panic.
Firefighters used hose lines and water jets to fully extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Ventilation systems and exhaust blowers were later used to clear smoke from the ward and restore normal air circulation.
Officials said the hospital’s fire safety systems and the quick response by staff played a crucial role in preventing a potentially serious situation. The incident caused limited damage to stored materials in the loft area, but the main hospital infrastructure and patient areas remained largely unaffected.
Sassoon General Hospital is one of the largest government-run hospitals in Maharashtra and handles thousands of patients every day. Due to the high patient load and the presence of critical medical units, emergency preparedness and fire safety measures are considered extremely important at the facility.
