Mira-Bhayandar: Pratap Sarnaik accused of acquiring ₹200 crore government land for just ₹3 crore
Mira-Bhayandar
Vijay Wadettiwar alleges that minister Pratap Sarnaik purchased government land worth ₹200 crore in Mira-Bhayandar for only ₹3 crore through a trust.
8 November 2025, Mira-Bhayandar – A major political controversy has broken out after opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused minister Pratap Sarnaik of purchasing government land valued at around ₹200 crore for just ₹3 crore. According to Wadettiwar, the land spans approximately four acres in the Mira-Bhayandar region and was allegedly acquired through a charitable trust linked to Sarnaik. He claimed the deal represents a massive financial loss to the state and demanded a formal investigation to determine how such a large difference between market value and purchase price could be approved. The allegation has sparked intense debate because the plot in question is located in a rapidly developing belt near Mumbai, where real-estate rates have been rising sharply for years. Wadettiwar said similar cases involving undervalued land transactions are surfacing across the state, and this one stands out because it allegedly involves prime property that should never have been sold at such a low valuation. He argued that the public deserves to know whether the land was reclassified, misrepresented, or transferred under special permissions that bypassed expected procedures.
Sarnaik has denied the allegations and stated that he has no knowledge of any such land transaction. He has asked Wadettiwar to provide solid documents if he wants the matter investigated further. Supporters of the minister say the accusations are politically motivated and timed to create unrest before upcoming civic and regional elections. They argue that since no official papers have been presented so far, the claims are speculative and aimed at damaging Sarnaik’s public image. Even so, the opposition is pushing for a probe by the Anti-Corruption Bureau or a judicial committee, insisting that only a formal inquiry can clarify the nature of the transaction. Political analysts point out that the matter has gained traction because it follows other recent controversies involving alleged misuse of government land across Maharashtra. This has raised concerns about whether land meant for public use or development is being diverted through undervalued deals.
Residents in parts of Mira-Bhayandar say they have been hearing rumours for months about unusual land movements in the region, but the scale suggested in Wadettiwar’s allegation has caught many by surprise. Real-estate consultants claim that four acres in that location could indeed command around ₹200 crore depending on zoning rules, road access and development permissions. If the land was transferred for just ₹3 crore, they say it would be highly irregular unless it was under special government designation or legal dispute. This has increased pressure on state authorities to explain what category the land originally belonged to and why it was reportedly sold at such a low figure.
As political arguments escalate, the state government has so far avoided making a detailed statement. Officials are expected to review the documents submitted by the opposition. If further inconsistencies surface, the controversy may widen beyond Mira-Bhayandar and reopen discussions about land-allocation policies across Maharashtra. For now, the allegation has become a talking point across Mumbai’s extended suburbs, with citizens and opposition parties demanding complete transparency on how government-owned land is valued and sold.
