Pune |02 March 2026: In a tragic development in Pune, the body of a missing youth was recovered from the backwater area of the Khadakwasla Dam on Sunday, prompting a detailed police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Sapkal, who had been reported missing a few days earlier after he failed to return home and could not be contacted by his family.

According to officials from the Pune Police, tourists visiting the scenic backwater stretch noticed a body floating in the reservoir and immediately alerted emergency services through the 112 helpline. A rescue team along with local police personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved the body from the water. After conducting a preliminary spot inspection and panchnama, the remains were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police confirmed that a missing person complaint had earlier been registered at Nanded City Police Station when Sapkal’s family reported his disappearance. Investigators are now examining call records, movement history, and other relevant details to determine whether the incident was accidental, a case of drowning, or involved any other factors. Authorities have stated that further clarity will emerge once the post-mortem report is received.

The Khadakwasla Dam, located on the outskirts of Pune, serves as a major water source for the city and is also a popular destination for visitors, especially during weekends and the monsoon season. Its picturesque backwaters attract families, young travelers, and photography enthusiasts. However, officials have repeatedly cautioned that such water bodies can be deceptively dangerous due to sudden depth variations, slippery terrain, and unpredictable currents.

Over the years, several incidents of drowning and accidental deaths have been reported near dam sites across the Pune district. Water safety experts emphasize that reservoirs and backwater zones are not designated swimming areas and often lack proper safety infrastructure such as lifeguards, warning signboards, or protective barriers. Despite repeated advisories, visitors sometimes venture too close to the water’s edge for selfies or recreational activities, increasing the risk of mishaps.

Local residents have expressed concern over recurring tragedies in the area, urging authorities to strengthen safety measures. Suggestions include increased patrolling, installation of CCTV cameras, clearer signage warning of deep water, and temporary restrictions in high-risk zones. Some have also called for public awareness campaigns, particularly targeting young adults who frequent such spots during holidays.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family has sought privacy as they mourn their loss. Police officials have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that all angles will be examined before reaching any conclusion. If required, statements from friends, acquaintances, and witnesses will be recorded as part of the probe.
