At a mass meeting in Hupari, Kolhapur, T. Raja Singh pushed for Maharashtra to enact an anti-“love jihad” law, framing it as a defense of Hindu communities and urging unity amid changing social patterns

Kolhapur | 02March , 2026: At a gathering in Hupari, Kolhapur district, Telangana legislator and activist T. Raja Singh called on the Maharashtra government to legislate against “love jihad,” arguing that rising interfaith relationships are part of a broader threat to Hindu society. His appeal came during a Hindu Rashtra awareness meeting attended by local leaders and members of right-wing groups.

Addressing the crowd at Hupari’s martyr plaza, Singh said past leaders taught respect for all faiths, but he claimed what he described as “love jihad, land jihad and injustice” demanded collective effort by Hindus. He insisted that a state law against what he termed love jihad should be passed to protect cultural identity.

The event, organised by a local Hindu awareness committee, drew people from several districts. Singh’s speech echoed narratives used by similar groups nationwide that allege a targeted effort to alter demographic patterns through interfaith unions, a theory widely described by critics as unfounded and based on misinformation.

Supporters at the rally backed his call for legislative action, echoing concerns over community cohesion and demographics. Critics of such rhetoric argue it can foster division and stigmatise interfaith relationships. Rights groups have previously flagged speeches similar to this for stirring communal tensions.
