A woman and her 18-year-old son from Nanajiv village in Daund taluka have been arrested for murdering the head of their family and trying to pass the incident off as suicide. The case surfaced after a post-mortem report contradicted the family’s claim and revealed multiple injury marks.

DAUND, 07 November 2025 – The deceased, 47-year-old Dattatreya (Abasaheb) Patole, had returned home from work on 2 May after drinking. Police say an argument broke out between him, his wife Usha Patole and their son Sanskar. The fight escalated and Patole suffered serious injuries, eventually collapsing inside the house. Instead of seeking help, the mother and son tried to hide what had happened. According to investigators, they bathed the body, changed his clothes and placed him outside the house the next morning, telling neighbours he had taken his own life by consuming pesticide. The police initially registered it as an accidental death.

The post-mortem findings changed the course of the case. Doctors found at least ten injury marks on Patole’s body and confirmed that he died from head trauma, not poisoning. This prompted officers from Daund Police Station, led by PSI Bidri, to question the family again. Their statements were inconsistent and evidence from the scene raised more doubts. During sustained interrogation, both the accused confessed to their involvement, admitting they staged the suicide to avoid arrest.

Villagers told police the family had frequent arguments, mostly linked to the father’s drinking habit. They said tensions between Patole and his son had been rising for months. The community has been left stunned not only by the killing but also by the deliberate attempt to erase the evidence. Police say the case highlights how domestic disputes can turn violent and how families often try to hide internal conflict until it escalates beyond control.

Investigators are now piecing together the exact sequence of events from the moment Patole returned home on 2 May to when the fake suicide was staged the next morning. Officers are also verifying whether anyone else was aware of the cover-up or helped dispose of evidence. Both accused are in custody and charged with murder, destruction of evidence and misleading police. The case has sparked discussions in the village about alcoholism, domestic violence and the lack of intervention in homes where repeated conflict is known to neighbours. Officials said counselling will be offered to the extended family and that further forensic checks will determine whether more charges need to be added.
