MMRDA completes a 450-ton, 56-meter steel span installation on Mumbai Metro Line 4 between Bhandup and Sonapur, marking over 84% project completion.
Mumbai | November 3, 2025:
The Mumbai Metro Line 4 project has reached a major milestone after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) successfully installed a massive 56-meter-long, 450-ton steel span overnight between Bhandup and Sonapur on the GMLR Junction stretch. The crucial operation marks over 84.5% progress in the construction of the ambitious metro corridor that aims to ease traffic congestion across the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.
The overnight installation was carried out with precision using nine high-capacity cranes, two multi-axle pullers, and over a hundred skilled engineers and workers. MMRDA coordinated closely with local authorities, traffic police, and utility service departments to ensure the work was completed safely and without disrupting road and rail traffic.
The Line 4 metro route, extending 32.32 kilometers from Wadala to Kasarvadavali with 30 stations, is one of Mumbai’s most significant infrastructure projects. Once completed, it will reduce travel time between the city’s eastern and central suburbs by more than half. The recent installation represents one of the most technically demanding tasks of the project and indicates that the major civil work is nearing completion.
Officials confirmed that with this achievement, focus will now shift toward system integration, station development, and final finishing work. Trial runs are expected to begin once all structural installations are complete. Visuals of the massive span installation have been shared by MMRDA, showcasing the city’s growing momentum toward modern public transit solutions.
The new line is expected to provide much-needed relief to daily commuters who currently rely heavily on road transport, often facing long traffic jams and delays. With Line 4 connecting key points like Wadala, Ghatkopar, Mulund, and Thane, it will significantly improve connectivity and reduce dependency on private vehicles.
Despite earlier delays and challenges due to land acquisition and coordination issues, the current progress has renewed optimism among officials and residents. MMRDA authorities reiterated their commitment to completing the metro line within the revised timeline, emphasizing that safety and quality remain their top priorities.
The Mumbai Metro Line 4 is part of the city’s broader plan to expand its metro network and decongest roadways. Once operational, it is expected to transform daily commuting patterns and enhance Mumbai’s reputation as a city moving toward sustainable and efficient urban mobility.
