Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link Project Set for May 1 Opening
The long-pending missing link section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is close to completion and is expected to open on May 1, promising faster travel and improved road safety
Pune | 06 March, 2026: The final phase of the much-awaited Missing Link project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is nearing completion, with authorities planning to open the new stretch for traffic on May 1. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve safety along the busy intercity corridor. The new alignment, approximately 13.3 kilometres long, connects Khopoli to Kusgaon and bypasses the steep and winding Bor Ghat stretch near Lonavala and Khandala. The current ghat section has long been known for traffic congestion and accident risks, particularly during weekends and holiday seasons when traffic between Mumbai and Pune surges.

Developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the project involves sophisticated engineering structures including two long tunnels, large viaducts, and a prominent cable-stayed bridge built across Tiger Valley. The bridge rises more than 180 metres above the valley floor, making it one of the most striking features of the new route.

Once operational, the missing link is expected to shorten travel time between Mumbai and Pune by nearly 25 to 30 minutes. Officials say the new stretch will allow vehicles to avoid sharp turns and steep slopes in the ghat section, ensuring smoother and safer movement for commuters Final construction activities, safety inspections, and finishing works are currently underway before the road is opened to the public.

Transport officials believe the upgraded route will not only improve travel efficiency but also reduce accident risks on one of the country’s busiest expressways. With its completion, the project is expected to strengthen connectivity between Maharashtra’s two major cities while offering motorists a quicker and more reliable travel experience
