Mumbai
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that large-scale highway and elevated corridor projects will reduce Mumbai–Pune travel time to 90 minutes, offering faster and safer connectivity.
Nagpur | December 15, 2025:Travel between Mumbai and Pune is set to become significantly faster after Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that the journey time will be reduced to just 90 minutes. The announcement was made at the Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur.
Currently, commuters spend between two-and-a-half to three hours travelling between the two cities, with congestion in ghat sections frequently causing delays, particularly during weekends and peak hours.
Gadkari said the time reduction would be achieved through a combination of ongoing and upcoming highway projects, improved road engineering in ghat areas, and the development of elevated corridors and expressways to ensure smoother traffic movement.

As part of Maharashtra’s infrastructure push, projects worth nearly ₹1.5 lakh crore have been sanctioned, including about ₹50,000 crore to be implemented through the state Public Works Department. The projects will focus on speed, safety, and fuel efficiency. One of the key proposals is a 130-kilometre greenfield expressway connecting Atal Setu to JNPT Chowk and extending up to Pune–Shivapur. This route is expected to strengthen connectivity between Mumbai, Pune, and southern Maharashtra.
In Pune district alone, road projects worth around ₹50,000 crore have been approved, with construction likely to begin within the next three months. Major initiatives include the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur four-tier transport corridor and the Hadapsar–Yavat elevated road, aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow.Once completed, these infrastructure upgrades are expected to offer faster travel, safer roads, reduced fuel consumption, and a significant boost to business and regional development.
