Mumbai–Vijaydurg Ro‑Ro Ferry Service Begins March 1, Offering Faster Coastal Travel but High Ticket Prices Draw Attention
Mumbai
The new Mumbai–Vijaydurg Roll‑on/Roll‑off (Ro‑Ro) ferry service begins March 1, reducing travel to about seven hours, though ticket fares remain relatively high, raising questions about affordability
Mumbai (Maharashtra)| February 22, 2026: Mumbai: The long‑awaited Mumbai–Vijaydurg Ro‑Ro ferry service will officially start March 1, 2026, providing a coastal water transport link between Mumbai’s Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf) and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district, officials confirmed.
The service, operated by M2M Ferries aboard the high‑speed vessel M2M Princess, is expected to cut travel time significantly. The journey by sea is estimated to take around seven hours, compared with more than 10 hours by road via the congested Mumbai‑Goa highway. Vehicles, including cars and two‑wheelers, can also be transported on the ferry, offering a convenient alternative for long‑distance travel.

According to published schedules, the ferry will make 16 departures in March as part of its pilot phase, timed to coincide with increased travel demand during the Holi festival season. The first departure on March 1 is scheduled to leave Mumbai at 8 am, reaching Vijaydurg by mid‑afternoon, followed by return journeys on select dates throughout the month.
However, ticket prices have become a focal point of public discussion. Fare categories range from ₹2,500 for economy to ₹9,000 for first class, while vehicle transport charges include ₹6,000 for cars, ₹1,000 for two‑wheelers, and ₹600 for bicycles. Critics argue these prices may be beyond the reach of average travellers, though officials say they reflect operational costs and the premium nature of the service.
Officials hope the service will boost tourism along the Konkan coast, ease pressure on road networks, and provide a scenic, comfortable alternative for residents and visitors alike. The success and future expansion of the service will be evaluated based on passenger response and operational viability during the initial phase.
