Nagpur Bench of High Court orders the State Election Commission to announce results of municipal council and nagar panchayat elections on a single day, December 21, amid political displeasure and legal debates.

Nagpur | December 3, 2025: The Nagpur Bench of the High Court has directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to declare the results of all municipal council and nagar panchayat elections on a single day, December 21. This comes after voting in 24 out of 284 locations was postponed to December 20, while the results for elections held earlier were initially scheduled for December 3. The High Court rejected the staggered declaration plan, emphasizing uniformity in result announcements.

The decision triggered strong reactions from several political leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who expressed displeasure at the Election Commission’s handling of the process. Fadnavis criticized the last-minute postponement, arguing that announced elections should proceed and results should not be delayed, as candidates work hard to campaign and vote counting delays may undermine the system’s integrity. He also suggested that the SEC’s lawyers may have misinterpreted the law, though he stressed that the SEC is autonomous and its legal position must be respected.

Senior officials of the State Election Commission, however, have maintained that all decisions were made within the framework of the law and that the commission will continue to uphold its statutory responsibilities. The SEC has emphasized its commitment to legal compliance and the impartial conduct of elections, despite political criticism.

The controversy underscores the need for reforms in election management, as highlighted by Fadnavis, who urged that future processes avoid similar last-minute disruptions. The High Court’s direction ensures that all results will now be declared uniformly, maintaining transparency and consistency across Maharashtra’s local body elections.
