Nagpur | 11 March, 2026: In a remarkable medical achievement from Nagpur, doctors at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) successfully saved the life of an extremely premature baby born at just 26 weeks and weighing a mere 700 grams. After a grueling 100‑day battle in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the infant has been discharged in stable condition with substantial weight gain and improved health.

Medical teams faced a complex array of life‑threatening complications from the moment the baby arrived in critical condition. Immediately after birth, the newborn suffered severe respiratory distress syndrome, necessitating emergency surfactant therapy and prolonged ventilator support. Doctors worked tirelessly to stabilise breathing and gradually transition the baby to non‑invasive support systems.

During treatment, the infant also developed septicaemia, requiring an extended course of antibiotics, and Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC), a serious intestinal condition that called for meticulous feeding adjustments. At another stage, the baby faced Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) a potentially vision‑threatening complicationwhere timely anti‑VEGF therapy helped avert eye damage.

Congenital heart‑related complications were also carefully managed under continuous monitoring. The coordinated effort of senior doctors, resident physicians and nursing staff ensured that each medical hurdle was met with expert, round‑the‑clock care.

Hospital authorities credited the infant’s survival to the dedication of the NICU team and advances in neonatal critical care, reinforcing the vital role of comprehensive healthcare services in treating extremely premature newborns.
