Nagpur Faces Escalating Pollution Threat as Air, Water and Noise Levels Spike
Nagpur
Nagpur’s reputation as a green city is under strain, with rising air pollution, contaminated water and growing noise levels raising serious public health concerns
Nagpur | 27 February, 2026: Once known for its greenery and cleaner air, Nagpur is now confronting a deepening environmental crisis as air, water and noise pollution rise to worrying levels across the city. Recent data and civic developments show that pollution is no longer an occasional problem but a persistent threat affecting residents’ health and quality of life.
Air quality monitoring stations in Nagpur have recorded repeated spikes into the ‘poor’ category over the past week, driven by high concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10). Experts and doctors have reported an increase in respiratory complaints, including breathlessness, cough and eye irritation, particularly among children, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Water quality is another major concern. The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has taken suo motu notice of widespread contamination affecting roughly 50 localities. Reports include discoloured water, foul smells, suspected sewer line leaks and inadequate treatment, leading to reports of illness in several neighbourhoods. The court has demanded formal responses from civic authorities as nearly four lakh households may be at risk.
Noise pollution from ongoing construction, traffic congestion and heavy development projects adds another layer to the city’s environmental strain, contributing to stress and health risks among residents.

Local activists are urging authorities to step up enforcement of pollution norms, expand real-time monitoring, control dust and emissions from construction sites and vehicles, and strengthen water supply management to reverse the declining environmental trends in the orange city.
