Nashik Municipal Corporation Mayor & Standing Committee Posts Seeing Political Maneuvering as BJP Holds Majority

After the Nashik Municipal Corporation elections, BJP’s clear majority sets the stage for upcoming mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee member appointments, prompting political contestation ahead of February 6 polls

Nashik/Maharashtra, January 31, 2026:In the aftermath of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, political efforts have intensified around the appointment of the mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee members as the BJP prepares to exercise its majority in the 122-seat civic body.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party in the civic elections, winning 72 out of 122 seats, enabling it to independently decide leadership positions in the municipal corporation. With the scheduled mayor and deputy mayor elections set for February 6, the BJP and other parties have already registered their corporate groups with the divisional commissioner to participate in the electoral process for these key posts.

Alongside the mayoral contests, attention has now turned to the political bargaining over 16 standing committee seats, which will be filled immediately after the mayoral and deputy mayoral appointments. Standing committee members play crucial roles in budget allocations, developmental approvals and civic governance oversight, making their selection a focal point of intra-party and cross-party negotiations.

While BJP’s majority gives it a strong claim over these appointments, discussions are reportedly unfolding about how the standing committee membership will be distributed among party corporators. Opposition parties, including Shiv Sena, Congress, NCP and others, are also strategising on how to secure representation in committee positions despite their smaller numbers.

The political momentum within the Nashik civic body reflects the broader implications of local governance following the January municipal polls, reinforcing the BJP’s influence yet highlighting the procedural contests that shape how municipal leadership and administrative committees are constituted for the next term.
