Two men who impersonated police to cheat citizens and steal jewellery were arrested after a long highway pursuit, ending near the Ozhar flyover. Police recovered stolen gold and linked the suspects to multiple cases

Nashik | 27 February, 2026: Officers from Ambad Police Station have arrested two men accused of posing as police to deceive and rob people, following a dramatic 30-kilometre chase that ended near the Ozhar flyover on the Nashik bypass. The suspects, identified as Amjadali Akbar Ali Baig, 47, and Faiyaz Imtiaz Ansari, 28, both from Bhiwandi in Thane district, were tracked down after a series of thefts targeting citizens by pretending to be law enforcement personnel.

According to police, the duo fled when approached by officers but was pursued at high speed along the highway before being cornered and taken into custody. During the arrest operation, the team seized over 200 grams of gold jewellery valued at more than ₹30 lakh, believed to be stolen during their fraudulent activities.

This arrest has helped clear a string of nearly 60 cases across multiple districts, including Nashik city, Nashik rural, Dhule and one in Karnataka, where the suspects were also wanted in connection with assaulting police personnel. Investigators said the gang specialised in targeting elderly citizens, convincing them to hand over their valuables by claiming to be officers conducting unofficial checks.

Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik praised the detection team for their persistence, especially Constable Mayur Pawar, whose efforts in tracking movements through CCTV footage led to the breakthrough. Authorities say further arrests of accomplices are expected as the probe continues.
