Bharat Taxi — India’s first driver-owned, cooperative ride-hailing service — began its pilot run in Delhi and parts of Gujarat, enrolling over 51,000 drivers. The platform promises zero-commission rides and better earnings for drivers.

Pune | December 4, 2025: A new chapter in India’s urban transport sector began on Tuesday with the soft launch of Bharat Taxi, a ride-hailing platform run on a cooperative model. Backed by several major cooperative institutions, the service has already registered more than 51,000 drivers — including cars, autos and bikes — across Delhi and parts of Gujarat.

Unlike traditional ride-hailing firms, Bharat Taxi is operated by a multi-state cooperative society under which drivers are stakeholders, not gig workers. The cooperative model ensures that drivers keep the full fare from each ride, with no commission deductions. Any surplus profits generated by the service are meant to be redistributed among driver-members.

Passengers can expect a ride-booking experience similar to existing apps — the platform offers transparent fare estimates, real-time vehicle tracking, multiple payment options (cash and digital), multi-language support, and 24/7 customer assistance. For added convenience, the service is also being integrated with public transit systems to support seamless first- and last-mile connectivity.

The pilot rollout of Bharat Taxi is seen as a government-backed attempt to offer a fairer, more driver-centric alternative to established aggregators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido. Organisers say widespread expansion is planned, and once fully operational, the service aims to challenge the dominance of private ride-hailing companies with a more equitable, cooperative-driven model.
