From February 1, 2026, NHAI removes the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) step for new FASTag issuance for private vehicles, simplifying toll tag activation.
Pune| 31January,2026: In a major relief for private vehicle owners, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a key change in FASTag rules, scrapping the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification process for newly issued FASTags starting February 1. The decision is aimed at simplifying the FASTag activation process and reducing post-issuance delays that motorists frequently encountered.
Earlier, after a FASTag was issued and activated, vehicle owners were required to complete KYV verification by uploading photographs and vehicle documents to confirm that the tag was correctly linked to the registered vehicle. This additional step often caused inconvenience, as many users faced repeated verification requests even after submitting valid documents, leading to delays and disruption at toll plazas.

With the revised rules, the KYV requirement will no longer apply to new FASTags issued for cars, jeeps and vans. Instead, issuing banks will be responsible for verifying vehicle details before activation, using centralized digital vehicle databases. This shift to pre-activation verification is expected to reduce redundancy, speed up the process, and ensure smoother toll transactions from the first day of use.
The relaxation will also benefit existing FASTag users. Under the new framework, routine KYV checks will not be conducted unless a specific issue or complaint arises. Verification may still be triggered in exceptional cases, such as suspected misuse, incorrect issuance, or when a FASTag is found to be improperly fixed on a vehicle.
Transport experts say the move reflects a broader effort to streamline digital services in India’s road transport system. By removing unnecessary post-activation steps and relying on existing vehicle records, authorities aim to improve user experience while maintaining system integrity and fraud prevention.
The change is expected to particularly benefit new car buyers and daily highway commuters, who will now be able to use their FASTags without worrying about pending verifications or sudden deactivation due to incomplete KYV processes. Toll plaza operations are also likely to become smoother, with fewer disputes related to inactive or partially verified FASTags.
In conclusion, the removal of mandatory KYV verification for new FASTags from February 1 marks a significant step toward hassle-free highway travel. By simplifying the issuance process and placing responsibility on issuing authorities, the updated rules promise faster activation, fewer disruptions, and greater convenience for millions of private vehicle owners across the country.
