NITES Slams Infosys for Ignoring Maharashtra Paid Leave Mandate Ahead of Municipal Polls, Files Complaint With Labour Commissioner
NITES
NITES accuses Infosys of bypassing Maharashtra’s paid voting leave rules, providing vague “time out” instead. Union seeks urgent Labour Commissioner intervention to ensure employees’ democratic rights are protected.
Pune | December 2, 2025: The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has strongly criticised Infosys for allegedly failing to comply with the Maharashtra government’s paid leave mandate for voters ahead of the upcoming Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections.
According to the Government Resolution, all registered voters are entitled to a full paid day off or at least one to three hours of paid time to cast their vote, without salary deductions or penalties. However, Infosys’ internal communication reportedly offered only a vague “time out,” introduced approval conditions not permitted under the GR, and left key details regarding the duration of paid leave unspecified.
NITES warned that such ambiguous guidance could confuse employees, discourage voter participation, and undermine their democratic rights. The union emphasized that clarity and strict enforcement are essential, especially given the scale of IT and ITeS employment in Pune.
In response, NITES has filed an urgent complaint with the Labour Commissioner, demanding that Infosys issue a revised circular fully compliant with the government order. The union also called for uniform adherence to the paid leave mandate across all IT companies in Pune to protect employees’ voting rights.
The controversy has sparked broader discussions in the IT sector on corporate compliance with election-related labor directives and the role of employers in facilitating civic participation.
