Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has suggested shifting major markets from Pune’s crowded core to areas near the upcoming ring road to reduce traffic congestion, pollution, and improve urban planning

Pune | 07 March, 2026: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has proposed relocating Pune’s major and crowded marketplaces outside the city limits as a long-term solution to rising traffic congestion and pollution. The suggestion comes as Pune continues to face increasing pressure on its urban infrastructure due to rapid growth.

Speaking at a public event, Gadkari advised local representatives and civic authorities to consider developing commercial and industrial zones along the upcoming Pune Ring Road. According to him, shifting major trading hubs to these peripheral areas could significantly reduce the heavy traffic flow currently seen in the city’s central markets.

Gadkari pointed out that if adequate land is reserved along the ring road for commercial activities, existing markets in the city could gradually be relocated there. This would help decongest major roads, lower pollution levels, and improve mobility for residents.

He also noted that similar urban planning measures had been successfully implemented in Nagpur, where shifting key commercial activities outside the city core helped ease traffic problems. Gadkari said that with strong political will and coordinated planning, Pune could adopt a similar model to address its growing urban challenges.Pune has witnessed rapid expansion over the past decade, leading to severe traffic bottlenecks around traditional commercial hubs and wholesale markets. Urban planners have repeatedly stressed the need for decentralised commercial zones to balance development and improve transport efficiency.

The proposed Pune Ring Road project is expected to play a key role in reshaping the city’s growth pattern by creating new corridors for trade and logistics outside the densely populated core. Experts believe that if such proposals are implemented effectively, they could significantly reduce congestion while supporting sustainable urban development.
