Opposition Slams Maharashtra Government’s Flood Relief Package; Wadettiwar Calls It Inadequate
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar criticizes Maharashtra government’s ₹31,628 crore flood relief package as insufficient for farmers, reiterates demand for farm loan waivers amid rising farmer distress in Marathwada.
Nagpur, October 7, 2025 — The Maharashtra government’s announcement of a ₹31,628 crore special relief package for farmers affected by unseasonal rains has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar termed the package “a drop in the ocean,” claiming it is far below the support required to aid distressed farmers across the state.
Wadettiwar pointed out that the compensation proposed by the government is minimal compared to the actual losses suffered by farmers. He highlighted that while the package follows National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) guidelines, states like Punjab provide up to ₹50,000 per hectare, independent of central assistance, emphasizing that Maharashtra should match or exceed these standards for its farmers.
The opposition leader also stressed the severity of the ongoing agrarian crisis in Marathwada. Between January and September 2025, 781 farmers reportedly committed suicide in the region, with 74 suicides occurring in just the past fifteen days due to excessive rainfall and crop failure. Wadettiwar accused the government of inflating relief numbers while failing to provide meaningful support to those most in need.
In addition to criticizing the relief package, Wadettiwar reiterated the longstanding demand for farm loan waivers. He reminded the state government of promises made by the ruling Mahayuti alliance prior to assembly elections and questioned the repeated delays in implementing these measures. The lack of clarity and timely action, he argued, worsens the plight of farmers and undermines public trust in government policies.
The opposition’s critique also extends to broader governmental accountability. Wadettiwar called for transparent disbursement of relief funds, effective monitoring of compensation processes, and direct engagement with affected farmers to understand their real needs. He emphasized that mere announcements without tangible action cannot alleviate the crisis or prevent further farmer distress.
Political analysts note that the disagreement over the flood relief package and loan waiver implementation reflects deeper challenges within Maharashtra’s administration. Opposition leaders like Wadettiwar are leveraging the situation to press for immediate intervention, drawing attention to the human and economic costs of delayed or inadequate government support.
As the situation unfolds, the state government faces mounting pressure to increase compensation, provide timely loan waivers, and implement long-term strategies to mitigate the impact of climate-related crop losses. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the government’s actions will satisfy the growing demands of farmers or fuel further political contention.
