OTP Verification Made Mandatory For Tatkal Booking On Key Trains From December 5
From December 5, OTP authentication will be required for Tatkal ticket bookings on select high-demand trains, both online and at reservation counters — a move aimed at curbing misuse and ensuring fair access.
Pune | December 4, 2025: In a bid to curb misuse of last-minute Tatkal quotas and ensure only genuine passengers benefit, a new OTP authentication requirement will be applied to Tatkal bookings from December 5 — for a select group of trains. The system covers ticket reservations made through all channels: official railway apps and websites, authorized agents and computerized counters.
Under the new process, a one-time password will be sent to the mobile number provided at booking, and the ticket will be issued only after the correct OTP is entered. This step adds an extra layer of verification to prevent bulk bookings, automated scripts or agent hoarding — practices that often leave genuine travellers stranded.
According to railway officials, the move aligns with earlier changes implemented this year: from July 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users have been allowed to book Tatkal tickets online, and OTP-based confirmation has been mandatory for online bookings since mid-July. The latest update now extends OTP verification to offline bookings as well.
Passengers are advised to ensure the mobile number entered during booking is active and accessible. Railways say that insistence on OTP verification will help restore fairness and transparency to the high-demand Tatkal scheme, and will make it harder for unauthorised agents to manipulate ticket availability.
