March 18, 2026 | Mumbai The Maharashtra government has begun the recruitment process for more than 5,400 professor positions across the state, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil announced. In addition, the Finance Department has approved the recruitment of 412 professors, who are expected to be appointed and operational by June this year. The minister further stated that a revised proposal regarding the structural framework of social work colleges has been submitted to the Finance Department for consideration. Within the state’s aided, non-government colleges, approval has already been granted for the recruitment of 5,012 assistant professors out of a total 11,918 vacant posts as of February 11, 2026.

Patil clarified that a decision on filling the remaining vacancies will be taken only after finalising the comprehensive staffing structure for both teaching and non-teaching personnel. He also noted that under the new education policy, a slight decline in student enrolment has led to a marginal reduction in vacant posts. However, the government remains committed to ensuring adequate recruitment based on actual requirements. The state also plans to review the recruitment situation after a year. Meanwhile, honorariums for professors appointed on an hourly basis have been increased. Efforts are underway to secure approval for filling approximately 2,900 non-teaching staff positions, which is expected to ease administrative and operational challenges in colleges
