During ongoing sugarcane protests in Kolhapur, a personal assistant of Raju Shetti was assaulted by protestors. Pressure on Dalmia Sugar Factory led to their announcement of sample rate of ₹3,634.
Kolhapur | November 8, 2025: In Kolhapur district, tensions flared when the personal assistant of farmer‑leader Raju Shetti, identified as Mr. Swastik Patil, was physically harassed during a sugarcane protest outside the Dalmia Sugar Factory’s office in Asurle‑Porle area. The agitators, affiliated with the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, targeted Patil after the factory management initially refused to declare a per‑tonne rate aligned with the Government’s Fair & Remunerative Price (FRP) formula.
The protest was triggered when Dalmia Sugar announced an opening rate of ₹3,525 per tonne for the new crushing season a rate firmly rejected by the farmers’ union, which demanded FRP plus additional premium of ₹100 and a ₹50 bonus recognised by the state government. Intensifying unrest led to a complete halt in the transport of sugarcane to the mill, forcing the management into overnight negotiations. By late evening, Dalmia Sugar capitulated and announced a rate of ₹3,634.83 per tonne ‑‑ nearly ₹110 above the initial offer ‑‑ thereby defusing the immediate situation.
Officials monitoring the situation report that the redressal highlights escalating farmer unrest across western Maharashtra’s sugar belt, where cost pressures and delayed payments are fuelling protests. The assault on Patil, though condemned by both sides, was viewed by some as a symptom of frustration spilling over. Union leader Shetti said the incident would be included in calls for stricter enforcement of milling rate obligations and real‑time weighing transparency.
The factory said in a statement that the altered rate is “subject to final board approval” and that transport will resume once normalcy returns to the site.
