Pakistan’s potential boycott of the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup clash threatens an estimated $25 million (~₹2,200 crore) loss, impacting ICC, broadcasters, sponsors, and the global cricket economy
New Delhi | 03 February, 2026 :The upcoming India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match is facing uncertainty as Pakistan has decided to potentially boycott the clash, citing political tensions and objections over Bangladesh’s role in the tournament. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) received government permission to participate, the final decision remains unresolved.
The financial implications of a canceled India-Pakistan match are enormous. According to industry experts and former ICC communication officials, the fixture generates an estimated $25 million (around ₹2,200 crore) in revenue. This includes earnings for the ICC, broadcasting networks, and sponsorship deals. Broadcasters like JioStar reportedly earn ₹200–250 crore from advertising during the match, with 10-second ad slots sold at approximately ₹40 lakh each.

For Pakistan, the stakes are particularly high. The PCB’s annual revenue is only $3.5 million, making it impossible for the board to compensate for the potential losses from a missed high-profile match. Former PCB and ICC officials emphasize that the economic fallout of such a boycott could affect Pakistan’s standing in international cricket, with ICC possibly enforcing penalties or sanctions.
The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is not only a sports spectacle but also a major commercial event. Globally, it attracts millions of viewers and generates substantial advertising and sponsorship revenue. ICC, broadcasters, and sponsors are urging Pakistan to reconsider, highlighting the match’s significance for the tournament’s success and financial stability.
BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla stated that discussions with ICC continue, and no official comments will be made until the matter is resolved. Meanwhile, ICC has reportedly warned that refusing to play could have “serious and far-reaching consequences” for Pakistan’s participation in international tournaments.
With both cricket boards under pressure, the fate of the match will have a decisive impact not only on the T20 World Cup schedule but also on the financial health of global cricket.
