Any PAN card not linked with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025 will be rendered inoperative, disrupting tax filings, refunds, banking, and investment activities starting January 1, 2026. Taxpayers urged to link immediately.

Mumbai|December 11, 2025:The government’s deadline for linking Aadhaar with PAN is fast approaching, and authorities have reiterated the warning: from January 1, 2026, all unlinked PAN cards will be deactivated.

The directive  issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)  applies to every individual who was allotted a PAN before July 1, 2017, or those whose PAN was generated using an Aadhaar enrolment ID before October 1, 2025.

Once deactivated, PAN holders will no longer be able to file or verify income tax returns, claim refunds, or carry out financial transactions requiring PAN. This includes banking operations, mutual funds, SIPs, loan applications, property deals, and other KYC‑based processes. Tax experts warn that delay could also trigger complications like higher tax deductions, blocked transactions, failed investment redemptions, and stalled salary credits.

Linking PAN with Aadhaar is entirely digital and can be done via the official income‑tax e‑filing portal. The process requires a valid PAN, Aadhaar number, and the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. After validation via OTP, the link is typically confirmed within a few days. The CBDT has clarified that taxpayers who manage to complete the linkage before the deadline may avoid any penalties or disruption. However, those who miss the deadline may need to pay a fee for reactivation of PAN.

With just weeks left, tax authorities and financial experts urge all PAN holders to check their Aadhaar‑PAN link status and complete the process at the earliest  to prevent a financial lockdown starting January.
