Parents Outraged as Students Forced to Get Haircuts Without Consent at School in Pune
At a Pune school, male students were compelled to undergo haircuts during school hours without prior parental consent, sparking backlash from parents and rights activists.
Pune | November 5, 2025: A storm of protests has erupted at a school in Pune after allegations surfaced that male students from grades 6 to 12 were forced to have their hair cut on campus—without parental consent or prior warning. According to parents, the school sent an email late at night stating that students failing to maintain the prescribed hair-style would be subjected to on-site haircuts, charged at ₹300 each, with no option to refuse.
The haircut session reportedly took place the next morning, with barbers brought into the school’s corridors between classes, where boys were made to line up. Students alleged the tools were unsanitised, and some reported minor injuries during the process. The entire act has been criticised by parents, experts and child-rights activists as a violation of bodily autonomy and possibly against the principles of the Right to Education Act and juvenile-rights safeguards.
Parents argue the policy was arbitrary, targeted only at boys, and lacked transparency. Many say the school allowed no time for objection or consent—they received the email at 9:52 p.m. on October 30 and the haircut drive was conducted the very next morning. The school administration defends the move as enforcing grooming standards and discipline, but critics say such enforcement crosses the line when consent and dignity are bypassed.
The controversy also raises questions about hygienic practices and ethics in school disciplinary measures. With parents now demanding a public apology and withdrawal of the mandatory haircut rule, the incident may prompt broader scrutiny of grooming policies, gender discrimination and student rights in schools.
