PCMC plans to set up ward-wise dog care centres across Pimpri-Chinchwad to manage the growing stray dog population and improve animal welfare.
Pune, 10 March, 2026: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has proposed setting up ward-wise dog care centres across the city as part of a structured initiative to manage the growing stray dog population while ensuring better animal welfare services. Civic officials have been directed to identify suitable land in each ward so that dedicated facilities can be established to handle stray dog treatment, vaccination and sterilisation more effectively.

The proposal was discussed during a review meeting of the municipal veterinary department, where officials emphasized the need for a decentralized system to address the issue of stray dogs in different parts of the city. By creating ward-level centres, the civic body aims to ensure quicker response to complaints and better coordination between veterinary teams and local ward offices.
According to officials, the centres will serve as local facilities where stray dogs can receive medical attention, vaccination against diseases such as rabies, and sterilisation procedures under animal birth control programmes. After treatment, the dogs will be released back into their original areas in accordance with existing animal welfare regulations.
Authorities believe that establishing dog care centres at the ward level will improve the efficiency of stray dog management and help address concerns raised by residents regarding dog bites, public safety and sanitation issues. The initiative is expected to bring municipal veterinary services closer to communities where stray dog populations are higher.
Civic administrators also noted that the project will involve coordination with animal welfare groups and volunteers who actively support sterilisation and vaccination drives in the city. Their participation is expected to strengthen the implementation of the programme and ensure humane treatment of animals.
Urban experts say that effective stray dog management requires a long-term strategy that combines sterilisation, vaccination, medical care and public awareness. Ward-level dog care centres can help implement these measures more efficiently because veterinary teams will have easier access to specific localities where interventions are needed.
Once suitable locations are identified, the municipal corporation is expected to prepare detailed plans for the establishment and operation of these centres across multiple wards in the city.
