PCMC to Float Fourth Tender for EV Charging Stations After Repeated Lukewarm Response

Despite multiple attempts since 2022, PCMC has failed to attract bidders for EV charging stations, prompting a fourth tender with relaxed conditions to boost electric mobility infrastructure
Pimpri-Chinchwad | 24March, 2026: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is set to issue a fourth tender to develop electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city, after earlier attempts failed to draw adequate response from private players. The civic body has been trying to establish charging infrastructure at 21 identified locations under a ‘build, operate and maintain’ model.
Officials said that despite modifying terms and conditions in three previous tenders over the past four years, private agencies showed little interest. In one instance last year, a contractor had nearly finalized the agreement, but withdrew at the last stage, stalling the project.

With over 24 lakh registered vehicles in the city, including nearly one lakh EVs, the lack of adequate public charging infrastructure remains a concern. Currently, only 17 private charging stations are operational, forcing many EV users to rely on home charging. This often becomes inconvenient for commuters when battery levels drop during travel.
Under the proposed model, the civic body will provide land for setting up the stations, while the selected agency will bear the cost of electricity connection, installation, operation, and maintenance for a period of 10 years. The estimated cost for developing all 21 stations is projected between ₹15 crore and ₹17 crore.

To improve participation, PCMC plans to ease eligibility norms and revise tender conditions. Key locations identified for the project include major transit points, public spaces, and transport hubs across the city.Civic officials remain hopeful that the revised tender will attract bidders and accelerate the development of EV infrastructure, which is crucial for supporting the city’s growing shift towards sustainable mobility.
