Pentagon Seeks $200 Billion for Iran War, Sparks Fierce Political Debate in US
The Pentagon’s massive funding request for ongoing Iran operations has raised economic concerns, with Democrats opposing the surge in military spending amid fears of long-term financial impact

Washington | 20 March, 2026: The United States is witnessing a sharp political divide after the Pentagon reportedly sought an additional $200 billion from Congress to support its ongoing military operations in Iran.
If approved, the total US spending on the Iran conflict could exceed half of Iran’s GDP, estimated at around $356 billion. In just the first week of operations, the US is believed to have spent nearly $11 billion, underlining the scale and pace of the military campaign.

The proposed funds are expected to be used not only for accelerating weapons production but also for deploying thousands of additional troops to the region. A key objective of the operation includes securing and reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has faced disruptions due to ongoing hostilities.
While Republican leaders have largely backed the proposal, Democratic lawmakers have strongly criticised the move, questioning both the necessity of the war and the mounting financial burden. The issue is likely to trigger intense debate in Congress, especially given procedural requirements in the Senate.

According to US Central Command data, over 7,800 targets have already been struck, with more than 8,000 combat sorties carried out. The operations have reportedly caused significant damage to Iran’s military infrastructure, including the destruction of over 120 vessels.
The funding push also carries political implications, as rising war expenses could become a contentious issue in upcoming electoral debates, particularly given previous criticism of foreign military spending.
