Pimpri-Chinchwad firefighters in Nigdi execute swift balcony rescue to save a toddler locked inside a third-floor flat, highlighting growing safety awareness.

Pune|11 December 2025: A three-year-old boy was rescued by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Fire Brigade after he was accidentally locked inside a third-floor flat in Nigdi Pradhikaran. The incident occurred in the early evening when the child’s family stepped out briefly and returned to find the door jammed from inside while the toddler remained alone and frightened. Neighbours quickly gathered outside the flat, attempting to unlock the main door while also trying to keep the child calm through the window. When their efforts failed, the fire brigade was immediately notified, prompting a quick and coordinated response.

A team from the nearby Pradhikaran sub-station reached the spot within minutes. After surveying the situation, firefighters set up an extension ladder to access the third-floor balcony. A safety net covered the balcony, and the team decided to cut through it carefully to avoid startling the child. Once inside, firefighters headed straight to the living area where the boy stood crying and confused. Within moments, the toddler was safely carried out and handed over to relieved family members waiting below. The entire operation took about fifteen minutes from the time the team reached the building, reflecting their readiness and efficiency.

Residents praised the fire brigade for their quick response and calm handling of the situation. According to on-site observers, the child appeared unhurt and regained composure soon after being reunited with his family. Incidents like this highlight how easily toddlers can get trapped due to the curious habit of shutting doors or playing with latches. Experts often emphasize that high-rise urban homes should incorporate child-safe locks and door-stop mechanisms to prevent such accidental lock-ins. Many families install balcony safety nets, but they are seldom prepared for situations where a child gets stuck alone inside the house. Fire officials have repeatedly encouraged residents to save the emergency number 101 and call without delay whenever a rescue is needed, even if it is not fire-related.

Nigdi and the surrounding areas have seen a steady rise in high-rise residential complexes, which means emergency services now deal with a wider range of rescue calls such as elevator malfunctions, balcony entrapments and accidental home lock-ins involving young children or elderly residents. The successful rescue of the three-year-old boy once again shows the importance of strong civic response systems in fast-growing urban regions. Firefighters involved in the operation stated that timely communication from residents played a key role in avoiding panic and ensuring the operation went smoothly.

As Pimpri-Chinchwad continues to expand rapidly, maintaining household safety and building awareness around emergency preparedness has become more important than ever. Simple preventive steps can avoid anxiety-filled moments for families living in multi-storey apartments. The rescue also serves as a reminder that professional assistance should be sought immediately when a child is trapped, rather than attempting risky methods to open doors or windows. In this case, swift action and proper coordination helped prevent a frightening situation from escalating into something more dangerous.
