Pimpri Mayor Ravi Landge spearheads Indrayani River clean-up drive, warning polluting industries of strict action to protect environment and public health.
Pune | 23 February, 2026- In a significant environmental initiative, Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Ravi Landge recently led a clean-up drive along the Indrayani River, highlighting the urgent need to combat pollution in one of the region’s key water bodies. The Mayor emphasized that industrial and civic pollution has long affected the river’s ecosystem, threatening aquatic life, public health, and the surrounding communities.

During the drive, municipal teams and volunteers collected plastic, industrial waste, and other debris from the riverbanks and water surface. Speaking at the event, Mayor Landge warned local industries and factories that strict action would be taken against those found dumping untreated waste into the river, in accordance with environmental regulations. He also called for industries to adopt cleaner production practices and invest in proper effluent treatment systems to ensure compliance with pollution control norms.
The Mayor stressed that river conservation is not only a matter of civic responsibility but also essential for sustainable urban development. “Our rivers are lifelines for our communities. Protecting them is crucial for public health, groundwater replenishment, and maintaining ecological balance,” he stated. Municipal authorities have pledged to increase monitoring of industrial discharges and impose penalties on violators, alongside promoting awareness campaigns for citizens.
Environmental experts note that urban rivers in Maharashtra, including the Indrayani, have faced increasing pollution due to rapid industrialization, untreated sewage, and plastic waste. River clean-up initiatives, combined with strict regulatory enforcement, are essential to restore water quality and protect local biodiversity. Experts also recommend long-term measures such as waste segregation, proper sewage treatment, and green buffer zones along riverbanks to prevent recurring pollution.

The clean-up drive attracted significant participation from local residents, NGOs, and student volunteers, reflecting growing community concern over environmental degradation. Mayor Landge encouraged citizens to actively participate in such initiatives, stressing that maintaining river health is a shared responsibility between the government, industries, and the public.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to conduct regular inspections of factories along the river corridor and install monitoring equipment to ensure compliance with pollution standards. The city also aims to implement riverfront improvement projects to make the Indrayani a cleaner and more sustainable natural resource for future generations.
