PMC removes 15,600 sq ft of illegal structures in Karvenagar and Undri in major anti-encroachment drive in Pune.

Pune | 19March, 2026: In a continued crackdown on illegal constructions, the Pune Municipal Corporation carried out a demolition drive in Karvenagar and Undri, removing a significant number of unauthorised structures across both areas. The action, conducted on March 18, 2026, reflects the civic body’s intensified efforts to tackle encroachments and enforce urban planning regulations in rapidly growing parts of the city.

According to officials, a total of 15,600 square feet of illegal constructions-including both temporary sheds and permanent structures — were demolished during the operation. The drive began early in the morning and was executed with a coordinated team comprising civic staff, police personnel, and labourers. Heavy machinery such as JCBs, gas cutters, and breakers were deployed to ensure swift removal of encroachments.

The demolition was carried out under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and supervised by senior officials, including Deputy Commissioner Somnath Bankar and Chief Security Officer Dr. Ramesh Shelar. Authorities confirmed that the targeted structures had been identified as unauthorised and were in violation of building norms and civic regulations.

This latest action is part of a broader, ongoing effort by the civic administration to address the growing issue of illegal constructions across Pune. In recent weeks, similar drives have been conducted in multiple areas, with thousands of square feet of encroachments removed. Officials have repeatedly stated that notices are issued to property owners before demolition, but failure to comply results in strict action under relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.

Karvenagar and Undri, both witnessing rapid residential expansion, have seen a rise in unauthorised extensions, roadside encroachments, and illegal commercial structures. Civic authorities believe that such constructions not only violate planning norms but also pose risks related to safety, traffic congestion, and basic infrastructure strain. By removing these structures, the administration aims to reclaim public spaces and ensure orderly urban development.

Residents in some areas have welcomed the move, stating that encroachments often block roads, footpaths, and access points, creating daily inconvenience. However, there are also concerns about the consistency of such drives, with some people demanding regular monitoring rather than periodic crackdowns. Urban planning experts argue that sustained enforcement, combined with better awareness and transparency in building permissions, is essential to prevent the recurrence of such violations.
