PMC Demolishes Illegal Mega Hoarding in Mohammadwadi–NIBM Annexe After Public Outcry

Pune | November 13, 2025: A major illegal hoarding near SM Ghule Circle in the Mohammadwadi–NIBM Annexe area was demolished by the civic body after weeks of growing public pressure. The massive structure, positioned at a busy junction and close to a bank ATM, had drawn consistent criticism from residents who flagged it as both a safety hazard and a blatant violation of municipal rules.
The demolition was carried out early in the day by a joint team from the civic enforcement squad and the engineering department. Officials confirmed that the hoarding lacked all mandatory permissions, including a structural stability certification, and had been erected in violation of local advertising by-laws. Its placement also obstructed ongoing road and footpath development work, further intensifying public anger.
Local activists and residents said they had repeatedly approached authorities, stressing that the towering steel frame posed a significant risk, especially during heavy winds or storms. According to them, the structure remained untouched for months despite prior warnings—something many believe reflects systemic lapses in regulatory enforcement. The demolition, therefore, was seen as a much-needed step toward restoring order and accountability.
Community forums in the area had been particularly vocal, organising petitions and demanding not just removal of the structure but also strict action against those responsible for installing it. Many citizens argued that penalising only the advertising contractor is not enough, insisting that any officials who overlooked the installation should also face inquiry. Their stance underscores a growing demand for transparency and responsibility within municipal operations.
The Mohammadwadi–NIBM belt has been expanding rapidly, with increasing traffic density and new residential developments. In such a high-growth zone, unregulated and oversized hoardings significantly increase the risk of accidents. Civic engineers have repeatedly noted that unsafe structures at busy junctions can collapse without warning, endangering motorists and pedestrians.
The latest action indicates a renewed push within the administration to crack down on unauthorized signage, illegal constructions, and public-space encroachments. Similar operations are expected to follow across other parts of the city as part of a wider campaign to enforce urban safety norms.
