Pune Municipal Corporation announces ₹150 crore monsoon action plan with ₹10 crore for 15 regional offices to improve drainage, flooding response and citizen safety.

4 March2026Pune is gearing up for the upcoming monsoon with a robust preparedness strategy from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Officials have approved a comprehensive action plan worth ₹150 crore aimed at reducing urban flooding, strengthening drainage systems and boosting overall resilience against seasonal weather challenges.

Under the plan, 15 regional PMC offices will each receive ₹10 crore to execute area-specific monsoon readiness works. The initiative is part of a larger effort to enhance infrastructure, minimize disruption during heavy rainfall and protect residents and businesses across the city.

The new monsoon strategy marks a shift toward decentralized planning. Instead of a centralized rollout, PMC is empowering regional offices with dedicated funds to address local priorities. Each of the 15 offices will manage their ₹10 crore allocation, allowing for tailored interventions based on ground realities.

Officials say this decentralization will enable quicker action on drainage blockages, encroachments, footpath flooding, and stormwater management. In previous years, delays in response and uniform planning had drawn public criticism as heavy rains exposed weak spots in Pune’s infrastructure.

The ₹150 crore program includes several targeted measures:

  • Drainage Network Improvements: Clearing existing storm drains and widening chokepoints where waterlogging is frequent.
  • Encroachment Removal: Identifying and removing unauthorized structures that block natural drainage paths.
  • Desilting of Nallahs: Cleaning small water channels to ensure uninterrupted flow during peak rainfall.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating residents on preventing waterlogging and maintaining cleanliness of local drains.
  • Emergency Response Ready Units: Setting up rapid response teams with vehicles and equipment to tackle flooding and blockages swiftly.

PMC engineers and civic leaders highlighted that the focus is not just on short-term fixes but long-lasting solutions that will strengthen the city’s readiness for future monsoons.

Pune’s topography and rapid urban expansion have made it vulnerable to flooding during heavy rains. In past monsoon seasons, several low-lying areas faced severe waterlogging, disrupting traffic, damaging property and challenging emergency services.

Experts say that piecemeal approaches without local insights often failed to offer lasting relief. With the new region-specific funding plan, the corporation aims to ensure that localized issues are identified early and addressed before monsoon peaks.

PMC officials noted that each regional office has been tasked with preparing a detailed project plan outlining how funds will be used. Projects are expected to prioritize drainage work in areas that historically report maximum problems during monsoon downpours.

A PMC engineer overseeing one of the regional offices said, “This allocation empowers us to act immediately on ground realities. We know which drains are prone to blockage and where desilting is urgently needed.”

Residents in flood-prone neighborhoods have welcomed the move, saying that quicker action could prevent the severe traffic jams and waterlogging seen in previous years.

To maximize impact, PMC’s monsoon plan will run in coordination with the Pune Traffic Police, Pune Fire Brigade and other relevant agencies. The aim is to streamline communication and mobilize resources efficiently during emergencies.

Authorities have also requested citizens to report issues like blocked drains, illegal dumping and erosion risks well ahead of heavy rains. PMC’s control room will operate a 24×7 helpline during the monsoon to track and act on such complaints.
